Rule 42.1.6.1 Professional Risks in Negotiating

Specialising in corporate and commercial dispute resolution, Toby is a senior associate at Middletons. Toby has worked with a number of clients from a diverse range of industries such as insurance, banking, telecommunication and mining/resources.

He has also worked in the City of London for three years in the financial services groups of Barlow Lyde and Gilbert and CMS Cameron McKenna.

Toby received the Japan Foundation Award for Outstanding Foreign Students of the Japanese Language at the age of 19 and at 16 was chosen to represent the state of Western Australia on the inaugural Sale of the Century student challenge.

Toby's work has been published in a range of publications including the Journal of International Financial Markets, Technology and Policy, the Journal of Judicial Administration and the Journal of International Banking Law and Regulation.

Toby is admitted to Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance, the Supreme Courts of New South Wales and England and Wales, and the Federal and High Courts of Australia.

Toby actively contributes to the community, including chairing Middletons Pro-Bono committee where he oversees the allocation of a significant budget. Toby has also coached mock trials at the Scots College, Sydney and judged the NSW High School Mock Trial and Mediation Competitions.

A native English speaker, Toby works at an advanced level in Japanese and French and can read Latin, Italian and Spanish. He holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts (Japanese) degree from the University of Western Australia. During his time studying, Toby worked as a Japanese translator and with Baker and Mackenzie in their Hong Kong and London offices.
